Portugal has overtaken Spain to take second place in the list of the largest producers of footwear<\/strong>, after Italy. In 2022 it reached 85 million pairs<\/strong> manufactured, as announced by the footwear association APICCAPS<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Over the last decade, Portugal has increased its production by around 14.4%<\/strong>, from 74<\/strong> to 85 million pairs<\/strong>. This has increased its market share to 17.1%<\/strong>. Italy<\/strong> has been on the decline, with an 18.6%<\/strong> drop in footwear production since 2012. In 2022<\/strong> produced about 162 million pairs of shoes<\/strong>, a figure far from the 199 million pairs <\/strong> produced in the previous decade. Footwear production in Spain<\/strong> also fell from 97<\/strong> to 83 million pairs,<\/strong> a drop of around 14%<\/strong>. Last year they produced around two million pairs less <\/strong> than Portugal.<\/p>\n\n

For 2023<\/strong>, the sector association APICCAPS<\/a><\/strong> estimates that Portuguese footwear exports fell<\/strong> by 11.3%<\/strong> in volume and 8.2%<\/strong> in value compared to the record year of 2022, when 66 million pairs<\/strong> were sold for 1,839 million euros<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

Currently, Italy<\/strong>, Portugal<\/strong> and Spain<\/strong> account for around 70% of European footwear production<\/strong>. Portugal has about 2.428 footwear companies <\/strong> (a decrease of 5% in a decade). It is the only country in Europe that has increased its production.<\/p>\n\n

Overall, European footwear production fell <\/strong> by 19.6%<\/strong> in a decade, from 617 <\/strong> to 496<\/strong> million pairs.<\/p>\n\n

Regardless of the sector’s conjuncture, continued investment in the sector is expected to enable it to position itself in international competition.<\/p>\n\n
