Portugal once again consolidates its position as the world’s leading exporter of cork, breaking the record by exceeding a value of 1.232 billion euros in 2023.
According to the Portuguese Cork Association (APCOR), cork exports have increased by around 2% compared to 2022. The strong growth is reflected in the 214 million euros generated in the USA and in the consolidation of the following markets France, the main destination, Spain, Italy and Germany.
With 90% of national cork production exported, the world has access to the unique and sustainable quality of Portuguese cork. After all, when it comes to cork, we are the undisputed leaders – and not just because we love good wine!

Who would have thought that humble cork stoppers would decide to step out of the bottle and conquer the world? They’ve already exceeded all export limits once again: 900 million euros, an increase of 21% compared to last year! Besides preserving wine, they seem to boost the Portuguese economy.

As the cork sector is highly dependent on the international environment, export performance can be affected by supply chain disruptions and demand levels. This already happened in 2023, which was characterised by a quarter of strong growth contrasting with the other periods of greater balance.
