Portuguese Exports of High-Tech Products are growing and are expected to accelerate as the number of companies in the sector increases and international contracts are signed. During the first six months of this year, external sales grew by around 7.7%, exceeding two billion euros, with the Aerospace sector showing the strongest growth.
The main Destination Countries are:
- Ukraine: 24.9 million euros (+210%)
- United States: 16.4 million euros (+507%)
- United Kingdom: 9.6 million euros
- Spain: 5.7 million euros
- France: 5.3 million euros
Fruits, Vegetables, and Flowers
The Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers sector is experiencing growth in national sales to External Markets. In the first half of the year, sales increased by around 13.4% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching €1.18 billion.
The sector exported to around 121 countries, with the European Union absorbing around 81% of the total sales of Fruit, Vegetables and Flowers produced in Portugal.Five markets accounted for around 74% of the value of sales, including: Spain, France, the Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.
Wines
In the first half of 2024, Portuguese wine exports increased slightly by 1.25% over the same period last year, reaching 452.4 million euros.
In terms of the number of litres exported, there was an increase of 8.5%, to a total of 171.5 million litres. The average price was 2.64 euros/litre.
France (53.4 million euro), followed by the United States (50.1 million euro) and Brazil (38.9 million euro) were the main export markets in terms of value.
In terms of volume exported (litres), France remains the leading producer (17.5 million litres). It is followed by Spain (16.4 million litres) and Angola (15.3 million litres).
Pharmaceuticals
Portuguese Exports to the United States have been growing, driven mainly by Pharmaceuticals, which now account for a significant share of total goods sold. In the first half of this year, they reached 600 million euros. This represents an increase of around 21% compared to the same period last year.
Among the main exports to the USA are:
- Rubber: 93 million euros (+38.5%);
- Machinery, Equipment and Electrical Materials: 164.4 million euro (-2.1%);
- Nuclear Reactors, Boilers, Machinery, Mechanical Appliances and Components: 107 million euro (+2.9%); – Cork: 98.5 million euro (-6.6%); – Cast iron, iron or steel works: 90 million euros (+15.8%); – Textile products: 63 million euro (+25.3%).

- Manufactured Textiles: 63 million euros (+25.3%).
Exports of the Automotive industry in the northern region of Portugal reached 5.357 billion euros last year, leading among the 24 identified sectors – including Textiles and Clothing, Machinery and Electrical Equipment, Basic Metals, among others – and representing about 19.8% of the total exports of this region.
Exports from the Automotive sector grew by around 12.7 % in the period 2022-2023, in contrast to the stagnant total exports from the Northern area. On a broader horizon, between 2011 and 2023, the cumulative growth of the Automotive industry’s exports was 77.5%, outpacing the region’s total exports, which grew by 68.7%.
In terms of representation in automotive exports by region, Ave (27.9%), the Oporto Metropolitan Area (26.6%) and Alto Minho (21%) stand out. Spain (30.9 %), Germany (20 %) and France (12.4 %) are among the most important destinations.
