International expansion has been a fundamental pillar of growth for the Wood and Furniture industry. Between 2010 and 2022, exports doubled, reaching 3 billion euros. In 2023, wood and furniture exports reached €3.157 billion. For the next five years, the Portuguese Wood and Furniture Industry Association (AIMMP) has set a target of €4 billion.
In terms of the sector’s export growth, the Home Decor category is particularly prominent. Agents, Architects, Interior Designers and the construction industry itself – particularly in the areas of Joinery, Doors and Flooring – are among the main international clients.
Key Markets
Spain, France, United Kingdom and Germany are four of the most important destination markets for Wood and Furniture exports in Europe. These are followed by larger and more economically powerful markets such as the United States, the Middle East, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Investments in these global markets are already yielding results, such as in the case of the United Arab Emirates, where exports of Wood and Furniture have increased from 13 million euros to 26 million euros since 2020.
Internationalizing to these international markets shows the progress and expansion of a sector that has become a key component of national exports.
Sector Challenges
War in Ukraine and Middle East, Red Sea cargo restrictions following attacks and political instability in relevant markets have been some of industry’s main challenges this year. Nevertheless, according to APIMA, companies in the sector are maintaining a positive and resilient attitude to these potential obstacles. Internationalisation, investment in technology, sustainability, innovation, design and high added value of products have been key differentiators of Portuguese brands, helping them reach new heights.
